US Bans Imports of Canadian Goods Worth $1 Billion

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the United States has implemented a prohibition on the sale of certain imported goods from Canada within the U.S. market. President Donald Trump signed an executive order enacting this ban, which became effective on Tuesday.

The list of affected goods includes specific beverages, dairy products, and motor vehicles. While the value of these prohibited items amounts to nearly $1 billion, a relatively small figure compared to the $880 billion annual bilateral trade volume between the U.S. and Canada, this action marks a new phase in the trade disagreements between the two nations, historically close allies and trade partners.

Jamison Greer, the U.S. Trade Representative, stated in a release that these actions were taken in direct response to what was described as “Canada’s discriminatory practices” concerning critical U.S. exports. The U.S. administration had previously announced in July that it would impose a 50% tariff on certain Canadian goods, alleging that Ottawa had engaged in discriminatory practices against American products. These tariffs took effect on August 22.

In response, the Canadian government also imposed tariffs of 15%, 25%, and 50% on various American goods, which came into effect on September 8.
