Iraq’s Cabinet Approves Popular Mobilization Law, Referencing Parliament

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the Iraqi cabinet has approved the “Al-Hashd Al-Shaabi” law and referred it to parliament for final review and voting. This action is part of a broader effort by the Iraqi government to strengthen the nation’s security institutions. The cabinet’s decision was reported by Al Jazeera.

In related developments, Sabah Al-Numani, spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, emphasized the government’s principled policy regarding the exclusive possession of weapons by the state. He stated that the government has undertaken effective measures to organize armed groups, asserting that the presence of weapons outside the framework of state institutions is unjustified.

Al-Numani highlighted recent shifts in this domain, noting that the government is paying close attention to the approach of groups that had previously conditioned the handover of weapons on the withdrawal of coalition forces. He concluded by confirming that, in line with these efforts, three major groups have surrendered all their armaments to the government. Other groups are also set to be organized within the official structure of the “Al-Hashd Al-Shaabi” forces.
