Turkish Opposition Leader Warns Against Military Intervention in Yemen

The leader of Turkey’s main opposition party has warned that deploying Turkish troops to Saudi Arabia as part of a defense agreement will drag Ankara into the ongoing conflict in Yemen. He criticized the decision, asserting it bypasses parliamentary approval and could lead to Turkish soldiers being drawn into a century-long war.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Ozgur Oezel, the chairman of Turkey‘s Republican People’s Party (CHP), emphasized that the decision to deploy the country’s military forces to Saudi Arabia within the framework of the Mecca defense agreement will transform Ankara into a party to the current conflict in Yemen. He stated that joint defense pacts are concluded during peacetime, and signing such an agreement with a nation embroiled in war makes the signatory a direct party to that conflict.

Oezel criticized the adoption of this decision without referring it to Parliament, saying, “The decision to deploy military forces was made yesterday evening. Article 92 of the Constitution emphasizes the necessity of parliamentary approval for sending military forces abroad. I oppose this risk of our soldiers being drawn into Yemen after 100 years. These military services are being carried out at the command of Trump.”

During a meeting held in Riyadh with the presence of representatives from Turkey and Pakistan, it was decided that the commitments of the Mecca defense agreement would be implemented and Saudi Arabia would be militarily strengthened.
