Indian Police Detain Opposition Party Leaders Amid Election List Protests

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Indian police on Tuesday detained key leaders of the prominent “Kukrooch Janatha” party, widely referred to as the “Cockroaches.” The arrests took place after the detained individuals bypassed security checkpoints to access the historic “Jantar Mantar” observatory in New Delhi.
The arrested individuals were reportedly chanting slogans demanding the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar, the Chief Election Commissioner, citing controversial amendments to electoral rolls. This action has fueled ongoing demonstrations across India.
Streets nationwide have witnessed near-daily protests since the beginning of the month, organized by supporters of the Kukrooch Janatha party and other opposition groups. Protesters are challenging electoral reforms that critics allege favor the ruling “Bharatiya Janata Party” (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In response, the Election Commission has denied any political bias, asserting that voters whose names were erroneously removed from the lists can re-register. The Bharatiya Janata Party, in turn, has accused its rivals of attempting to “weaken democracy” by unjustly questioning the legitimacy of the electoral process.
On Monday, thousands participated in a protest march organized by opposition groups. This demonstration followed police thwarting earlier plans by the Kukrooch Janatha party for protests, resulting in the arrest of thousands of demonstrators, including party leaders.
In a move to enhance security measures, Delhi Police announced that the Jantar Mantar observatory, situated in the capital’s commercial heart, is no longer a designated venue for protests. Three alternative locations have been designated for demonstrations.
