China Urges US Action on Nuclear Disarmament, Dismisses Participation Calls

China has deemed the United States’ call for Beijing to join nuclear disarmament talks as unfair and unrealistic, stressing that nations with the largest nuclear arsenals bear primary responsibility.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, China has called for concrete actions from the United States regarding nuclear disarmament, stating that Washington’s request for Beijing to participate in nuclear disarmament negotiations is unfair, baseless, and unrealistic. Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made these remarks during a press conference, responding to statements from U.S. President Donald Trump, who had indicated that Washington was in discussions with Moscow and Beijing about reducing nuclear arsenals.

Mao emphasized the special responsibility of countries possessing the world’s largest nuclear arsenals in the realm of disarmament, urging the United States to fulfill its commitments in this regard. The spokesperson reiterated that nations with the most substantial nuclear stockpiles must accept their special and primary responsibility for disarmament. By significantly reducing their nuclear weapons, they should pave the way for advancing the disarmament process internationally.

Beijing has also announced that its policy is based on a no-first-use of nuclear weapons and maintaining nuclear capabilities at a level necessary for national security defense, asserting that China has no intention of engaging in an arms race with other countries. Previously, China had opposed the U.S. request to join trilateral nuclear arms control negotiations, arguing that the size of its nuclear arsenal is not comparable to the nuclear capabilities of the United States and Russia. Beijing maintains that the U.S. and Russia, as the two nations with the largest nuclear arsenals, must first pursue significant and verifiable reductions in their weaponry to create the necessary conditions for other nuclear-armed states to participate in the disarmament process.
