Turkish Parliamentarians Voice Strong Opposition to ‘Mecca Agreement’

Several members of the Turkish Parliament have voiced staunch opposition to the ‘Mecca Agreement,’ citing grave military and security repercussions, and asserting that the deal primarily serves the interests of the United States and Israel.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, a number of Turkish parliamentarians have declared their firm opposition to the “Mecca Agreement” and its associated military ties. Namik Tan, a member of the opposition “New Road” party, expressed his dissent, stating that the agreement treats the lives of Turkish soldiers as a commodity to be exchanged for Saudi riyals. Tan further elaborated that the “Mecca Coalition” exclusively advances the interests of the United States and the Zionist regime. He emphasized that the fundamental mission of Turkish soldiers is not to protect Saudi territory but to defend their own nation. The critical representative also voiced his opposition to factions compelling Turkish citizens, after a century, to once again lament the situation in Yemen. He suggested that the approaching election season and the urgent financial needs of certain groups might be a motive for accepting funds from Saudi Arabia.

Conversely, Tahsin Bejan, another parliament member, asserted that Saudi Arabia has been collaborating with the United States and the Zionist regime in its aggressions against Yemen since 2015. He also noted that it seems to be forgotten that Yemenis have fired missiles towards Israel, a regime currently committing genocide in Gaza.

Metin Ergun, a different parliament member, questioned why Turkey should accept a new military commitment, pointing out that the scope, associated threats, and ultimate nature of such a commitment remain unclear. Gulan Akça Köpoğlu, a female parliament member, explicitly stated her opposition to the “Mecca Agreement” and all war agreements that draw Turkey into further conflicts. Lütfi Türkkan, another representative, stressed that Turkey cannot permit the movements and mission locations of its military to become entangled with the crises of other nations. Finally, Hasan Karal stated that Turkey is obligated to distinguish between the legitimate right of self-defense and military intervention in the internal political structure of another country.
