Lebanese Environment Minister Warns of Devastating Environmental Impact from Israeli Military Operations

Lebanese Environment Minister Tamara El Zein has reported that Israeli military operations since October 2023 have destroyed over 16,000 hectares of agricultural land and caused severe ecological damage.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Tamara El Zein, Minister of Environment of Lebanon, announced that the Israeli military has burned more than 16,000 hectares of the country’s agricultural land between early October 2023 and September 2026.

The Lebanese government official explained that these military actions were carried out using phosphorus bombs and other munitions, with an estimated 1,800 tons of explosives deployed across just three regions in southern Lebanon.

The remarks highlighted that Lebanon is currently facing widespread environmental consequences resulting from these attacks, including the destruction of forests, scorched agricultural lands, damage to protected areas, and the complete loss of crop yields.

Furthermore, the cabinet member issued a warning regarding the long-term repercussions of these aggressions on water quality, soil health, and agricultural production. She detailed that the Israeli military consumed 80 tons of explosives in Majdal Zoun, 700 tons around the Beaufort Castle in Nabatieh, and 1,100 tons in the Al-Taher heights—a campaign of bombardment that has reportedly triggered earthquakes exceeding magnitude four on the Richter scale.
