Disruption of internet cables on the coast of Yemen

Undersea internet cables off the coast of Yemen connecting Europe to India have been disrupted.

According to a report published by the American agency Bloomberg, the submarine internet cables off the coast of Yemen that connect Europe to India have been disrupted, and the telecommunications company that owns them must find a way to repair them in this war zone.

Prinish Padayachi, chief digital officer of Seacom Ltd, the South African company responsible for the cable, told Bloomberg in an interview on Monday that the company discovered a defect in the cable on Saturday, February 24. It is estimated that this defect occurred in waters between 150 and 170 meters deep, in the area where Yemen conducts its operations against the ships of the Zionist regime.

The incident highlights the weakness of critical maritime infrastructure, particularly in the Red Sea, which includes approximately 16 cable systems connecting Europe to Asia via Egypt. According to Padayachi, while Seacom was able to quickly reroute Internet connections to alternative cables, it now has to find a way to solve the problem of repairing cables in a war zone.

The company is working with Emirates Telecom’s Cable Repair Company to assess how to secure the ship that will repair the damage and whether the ship will require a military or armed escort.

The Yemenis had previously announced on social networks that if the hostile behavior of America, England and the Zionist regime continues, there is a possibility of the internet being cut off, but now there is no indication that they are involved in this disruption.

According to the International Commission for the Protection of Cables, the majority of cable failures are caused by pulling fishing gear such as trawl nets or anchors along the seabed. They have now announced that they don’t know if someone cut the cable or if it was unintentional.
