Almost a month has passed since the formation of what is called the US-led anti-Yemeni coalition, and among the countries of the Persian Gulf region, only “Bahrain” is present in this coalition; But the evidence shows that the UAE is making the most of this opportunity to actually build its second naval and air base in the Yemeni islands. In Yemen’s “Abd al-Kuri” island of the Socotri archipelago located in the Gulf of Aden, the UAE is building a large military base that includes “advanced radar systems”, “anti-aircraft and missile shield systems” (such as Patriot and Iron Dome) and. .., in addition to that, the construction of “airport runway” and “ship berth” shows that this base will be used by the Air Force and the Navy.

Abdul Kouri Island is the second largest island of the Socotri archipelago, with an area of ​​about 133 square kilometers, its population is only about 1400 people, and it was considered among the most deprived areas of Yemen. In a report published by the local newspaper Al-Alayam in 2018, the people of this island complained about the lack of schools, hospitals, etc.! Certainly, in such a context, the provision of services by the UAE will bring serious luck and extensive cooperation between the locals and Abu Dhabi. It is less than 100 km from the coast of Somalia in the Horn of Africa, and from the north it is considered exactly as the southern gate of the Gulf of Aden. It is noteworthy that right on the northern shores of the Gulf and at the entrance to the corridor of this Gulf, the UAE has built the “Al-Ryan” military base on the edge of the “Al-Mukalla” port, so that it has a military base on both sides of the entrance to the Gulf of Aden.

On the other hand, this project can be seen as a step towards the UAE’s final control over the Socotri archipelago and its annexation to its own land (!), an event that, although geographically, seems unlikely; But at least a part of the UAE government is following it seriously.
