Europeans welcome Sweden’s joining NATO

A number of European countries welcomed Sweden's membership in NATO and called it a strengthening of the security of this military pact.

As quoted by AFP, Swedish Prime Minister Olaf Kristerson said Thursday at a ceremony in Washington that his country’s membership in NATO is “a victory for freedom.”

He called this action the beginning of “a new history-making period in Sweden’s security policy” and added: unity and solidarity will be Sweden’s guiding light as a NATO member.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also called Sweden’s membership in this military pact “after more than 200 years of non-commitment policy” historic.

He added: Sweden’s membership makes NATO stronger and Sweden safer and the whole alliance safer.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sonak called Sweden’s accession as the 32nd member of NATO “historic” and said: NATO is the most successful defense alliance in history.

The German Foreign Ministry also wrote on X social network: This alliance with Sweden will become stronger and our people will be safer.

The Dutch Foreign Minister Hanke Bruins Sloot announced on X social network: The Netherlands welcomes Sweden’s membership in NATO. This membership strengthens the North Atlantic Treaty and strengthens our collective security.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said in a night speech on Thursday night: Another country in Europe has become safer against the evil of Russia.

He pointed to Ukraine’s desire to join NATO and said: a day will come when Sweden will also congratulate Ukraine on joining this alliance.

On Thursday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken received Sweden’s accession documents to the NATO treaty from Swedish Prime Minister Olaf Kristerson at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Washington, and this European country is now officially the 32nd member of NATO.

According to the NATO constitution, a country becomes a member of this alliance after submitting its membership documents to the US government. These documents are kept in the US Department of State, which acts as the trustee of the treaty for NATO.

After Russia attacked Ukraine, Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership. Finland became a member of this military pact last April.
