The General Assembly will hold a meeting regarding the veto of the amendment to the Gaza resolution by the United States

Following the US veto of the amendment to the Security Council resolution on humanitarian aid to Gaza, the General Assembly plans to hold a meeting in this regard.

According to the report of the international group of Fars news agency, following the veto of Russia’s proposed amendment to the Security Council resolution by the United States, the United Nations General Assembly plans to hold a meeting to examine this issue.

Russia’s amendment to the previous Security Council resolution was to further facilitate humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and specifically called for an “immediate and lasting cessation of hostilities”.

The session of the United Nations General Assembly is scheduled to be held on January 9, 2024.

In late December, the Security Council of the Organization The United Nations approved a resolution prepared by Arab countries on sending humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. Before the vote, Russia proposed an amendment to the resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians in Gaza. This amendment was vetoed by the United States of America.

This resolution was approved with 13 votes and two abstentions from Russia and the United States.

The approval of this resolution took place while the voting on it was postponed four times in the past days. Finally, the American representative announced today that he is ready to vote on the new amended text.

Since the start of the Zionist regime’s attacks on the Gaza Strip on October 7 (15th of October), the US government has declared its full and unequivocal support for the operations of this regime in Gaza.

So far, the US government has vetoed several resolutions calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza by repeating the narrative of the Zionists.

Vasily Nebenzia, Representative Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations previously said that the United States is the only country in the world that stands up for Israel in front of the international community, which insists on stopping military operations in the Gaza Strip.

He added: “Such a policy is a result of Washington’s unilateral and selfish position, which aims to usurp the Middle East settlement process and ignore any action by its regional ally, Israel.”

According to a resolution of the General Assembly that was approved in May 2022, after the veto of the Security Council resolutions by one or more members of the Council, the President of the General Assembly must issue a call for a meeting of the General Assembly.
