On Friday, the Georgian riot police used tear gas in different regions of Georgia to disperse demonstrators protesting the government’s decision to postpone the country’s accession to the European Union for a year. 2028 they have come to the streets, used.

Thousands of people have come to the streets in Tbilisi, the capital of this country, and other cities of this country to protest the decision of Irakli Kobakhidze.

Irakli Kobakhidze, the prime minister of Georgia, also responded to Brussels’ approach and announced that he will suspend his country’s EU membership application process until the end of 2028.

This position became stronger after the European Parliament condemned the October 26 parliamentary elections in Georgia, calling it an “unfree and unfair” election. After holding parliamentary elections in Georgia, Brussels wants these elections to be repeated under international supervision within a year.

Kobakhidze reminded in a statement: Georgia is a European country. Our responsibility is to make Georgia a full member of the European family. The relations between Georgia and the European Union are bilateral and can only remain bilateral. We are a zealous and honorable nation with a long history. Therefore, it is completely unacceptable for us to consider joining the European Union as a favor and mercy from the European Union.

Irakli Kobakhidze also said that the government will refuse to receive the funds allocated by Brussels.

This is while the European Union had previously announced any budget support to Georgia due to the imposition of the so-called “foreign agent” law and other “anti” decisions. “Democratic” adopted by “Dream of Georgia” party.

With the opposition refusing to recognize the legitimacy of the new parliament and boycotting its proceedings, Kobakhidze will continue to serve as prime minister. The Parliament of Georgia has approved the new cabinet of this country despite the fact that the seats of the opposition remain empty.

The European Parliament recently passed a resolution in which the ruling party “Dream of Georgia” is criticized for weakening democracy in this country.

This resolution mentions serious election violations, including voter intimidation, vote manipulation, interference in the work of observers and media, and manipulation of electronic voting machines.

European Parliament representatives called the election results unreliable and asked the international community not to recognize these results.

European legislators have also called for European Union sanctions against the prime minister and high-ranking officials of Georgia.

Their reasoning for this request is that the policies of the Tbilisi government are not compatible with the goals of the Euro-Atlantic integration of this country.
