Trump Administration Faces Incomplete Data Leak; Is Hagset Next to Be Fired?
U.S. Defense Secretary’s Blunder Over Leaking Military Operation Details on Controversial ‘Signal’ App Puts His Job at Risk
The English section of Webangah News Agency, citing Mehr news Agency and Vice, reports that Pete Hegseth, the U.S. Defense Secretary under former President Donald Trump, has become the second senior American official—after National security Advisor Mike Waltz—to share classified details of Washington’s military operations against Yemen on a messaging app involving unauthorized individuals. this incident could provoke Trump’s anger and put the Defense Secretary at risk of dismissal.
Vice noted that Hegseth shared operational specifics in a separate channel on the Signal messaging app, where—reportedly “unintentionally”—a senior American journalist was present! Further investigations revealed that Trump’s Defense Secretary also disclosed operational intelligence in another group within the same platform…Merchan has shared that Jennifer Rochett, the spouse, Tim Parlatore (a lawyer), Phil (her brother), and a former Fox News producer were members!
Even though Hegst’s spouse holds no position or role in the Department of defense, both phil and Parlatore have roles at the Pentagon. However, it is said that these two individuals are also not in positions where they could access or be aware of operational details. It remains unclear why those present in the second conversation group had security clearance!
This scandal comes as the U.S. Department of Defense faces an examination into an information leak that led to the suspension of three senior advisors to Hegst. Additionally, a few weeks ago, The Atlantic revealed in a report that Mike Walter, Trump’s national security advisor, had “accidentally” and “inadvertently” added Jeffrey Goldberg, the magazine’s editor-in-chief, to a Signal channel where classified information related to a military strike on Sana’a was being shared!According to Wik, the information and messages from the second Signal group were sent on March 15 via a gap in security and included details about the timing of F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet missions targeting Houthi (Ansar Allah Yemen) positions.
Chaos at the Pentagon
Although the White House has not responded to this report, calls for Hagstedt’s resignation are growing louder. Chuck Schumer, the U.S. Senate Minority Leader, along with other Democrats, has urged Trump to rid himself of hagstedt’s “evil.” Schumer wrote on X: “The relentless leaks keep coming, and we keep learning how Pete Hagstedt is putting our lives at risk. Yet Trump remains hesitant and weak in firing him. Pete Hagstedt must be removed.”
John Olivet, a close advisor to Hagstedt and his former press secretary, also criticized the “chaos at the Pentagon” in an article for Politico: From leaks of sensitive operational plans to mass dismissals…The current inefficiency (at the Pentagon) is a major disruption for a president who deserves far better subordinates.
According to him, having resigned from the Pentagon last week, Hagst is now “overseeing a strange and mysterious purge that has left him without a senior advisor, with more dismissals on the way.” Even staunch supporters of the secretary like me must admit that “last month saw a full-blown breakdown at the Pentagon, which is turning into a serious problem for the governance.”
