Kremlin Calls U.S. Opposition to Ukraine Joining NATO Encouraging
kremlin Spokesperson Describes U.S.Government’s Stance on Ukraine Joining NATO as “Satisfactory”
According to the English section of Webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Reuters, Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, stated that the position of Donald Trump’s U.S. administration regarding Ukraine’s potential NATO membership—wich it deemed unlikely—was “satisfactory.” However, he refrained from commenting on Trump’s hopes for reaching a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine this week.
Keith Kellogg, the U.S. envoy for Ukraine affairs, said yesterday that NATO membership for Ukraine was ”off the table.” Trump has repeatedly claimed that previous U.S. government support for Ukraine’s bid to join NATO was a key reason behind the outbreak of war.
On this matter, Peskov remarked: “At various levels in Washington, we have heard that Ukraine’s membership in NATO is not an option on the table.”Russia Warns Ukraine against NATO Membership, Calls It a Threat to National Interests
For us, the satisfaction and alignment with our position were significant.
He further added that Ukraine’s membership in this military alliance under U.S. leadership “threatens Russia’s national interests, and this is one of the root causes of this war.”
Putin has repeatedly stated that if Ukraine officially moves toward joining NATO and fully withdraws its forces from the four former Ukrainian regions now under Russian control, it would mean the end of the war.
In November 2024, Reuters reported that putin was ready for a ceasefire agreement with Trump but opposed granting territorial concessions on key disputed lands and insisted that Kyiv abandon its NATO ambitions.
Trump recently said he hopes Russia and Ukraine can reach an agreement to end the war this week. Peskov, reacting to these remarks, stated: “At present,we do not have any intention to comment on speculative reports—especially regarding specific timelines!” Putin and the Russian side still…Russia is seeking a diplomatic solution. We are also continuing to work with the American side and hope that this cooperation will yield results.
Russian diplomats recently responded directly to questions regarding Bloomberg’s latest report about U.S.preparations to formally recognize Russia’s sovereignty over Crimea as part of a peace agreement, stating: “Efforts and cooperation aimed at finding a peaceful resolution in the general assembly do not stop, nor should they be halted—however, they must be conducted with full caution and without haste.”
