UN Warns Gaza on Brink of Widespread Famine as Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned that Gaza is on the verge of a catastrophic famine, with more than 100,000 children and 37,000 pregnant or breastfeeding women projected to suffer acute malnutrition by April 2026. The UN reports that 1.6 million people in Gaza will face severe food insecurity by mid-2026, and a full-scale famine could engulf the entire region within months if hostilities resume and aid remains restricted.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza has become increasingly fragile due to destroyed infrastructure, collapsed livelihoods, dwindling food production, and severe aid delivery constraints. Adhanom emphasized that only 50% of health facilities are partially operational, while critical shortages of medicines and medical equipment persist.
The UN has called for immediate and unconditional access to medical supplies to save lives. Meanwhile, Save the Children has warned that despite the ceasefire, the humanitarian catastrophe continues, with urgent needs for winter shelters, prefabricated homes, and warm clothing—particularly for children, who are most vulnerable to cold-related health risks.
The organization stressed that reopening Gaza’s crossings for humanitarian aid is essential, as sustained access remains crucial to addressing basic needs. It cautioned that delays in aid delivery could endanger thousands of civilians, especially children, even without active conflict.
