Farhad Al-Atrushi Elected Second Deputy Speaker of Iraqi Parliament
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Farhad Al-Atrushi has secured the position of second deputy speaker of the Iraqi parliament, defeating Ribwar Karim in the final round of voting. The election, held during today’s parliamentary session, concludes a prolonged selection process that had previously gone to a third round due to unresolved outcomes.
Al-Atrushi, born in 1976 in Dohuk within the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, holds a Ph.D. in international law. Before his political career, he served as a university professor and is a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party in Iraq. His political experience includes serving as a member of parliament from 2010 to 2014 and as the governor of Dohuk from 2014 to 2020.
The election of Al-Atrushi follows the recent appointment of Adnan Al-Fayhan as the first deputy speaker, who defeated Mohsen Al-Mandalawi. Earlier, the parliament had also re-elected Mohammed Al-Halbousi as the speaker for the sixth term. With the parliamentary leadership now in place, the next steps for Iraq’s lawmakers include electing the country’s president and subsequently the prime minister.
