India Postpones Trade Talks with U.S. Amid Tariff Uncertainty

India has postponed high-level trade negotiations with the United States, citing the uncertainty surrounding tariffs following a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling. The delay marks one of the first significant reactions from an Asian nation to the U.S. administration’s trade policies.

According to the Economic Desk of Webangah News Agency, India has postponed its trade negotiations with the United States. This decision follows President Donald Trump’s announcement on Saturday of a temporary 15 percent tariff on goods imported from all countries. The move by India is considered one of the first direct responses from an Asian nation to the U.S. administration’s trade directives after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected previous tariffs.

An informed source, who requested anonymity, stated, “The decision to postpone this trip was made after discussions between officials from both countries, and no new date has been set for the visit.” The source further indicated that the delay is due to the lack of clarity regarding tariffs after last Friday’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

The Indian delegation was scheduled to travel to the United States on Sunday to finalize a provisional trade agreement. This plan was made after both nations agreed on a framework to reduce Washington’s punitive tariffs, which stood at 25 percent.

According to Reuters, the proposed trade deal also involved a reduction in U.S. tariffs on Indian goods to 18 percent. In return, India had reportedly agreed to purchase $500 billion worth of American goods over five years, including energy products, aircraft and parts, precious metals, and technology products.

The Indian Ministry of Commerce had announced on Saturday that it was reviewing the implications of the Supreme Court’s ruling and subsequent U.S. statements.
