UK Parliamentarian Criticizes London’s Weak Stance on Palestinian Issues

Emily Thornberry, Chair of the UK House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, has stated that the British government has fallen short in its obligations toward the Palestinian people, failing to impose economic costs on Israel for its ongoing policies in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Emily Thornberry, Chair of the UK House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, asserted that the British government has been deficient in its approach to the Palestinian people. She highlighted that London has failed to make Israel’s continuous policies in the West Bank and Gaza Strip economically burdensome for the Israeli regime.

Thornberry commented on the issue of the UK recognizing a Palestinian state, stating that this action should have been the initial step in a series of practical measures. However, she noted that it was not followed by specific actions to support a two-state solution.

Addressing the ongoing fatalities and the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Gaza, Thornberry emphasized that the current situation cannot be accurately described as a genuine ceasefire.

The Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee further argued that Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank must be made costly for the Israeli regime. She warned that if the current trend persists and effective international measures are absent, the events witnessed in Gaza could be repeated.

The United Kingdom has called for a ban on imports of goods produced in illegal Israeli settlements and has also proposed sanctions against individuals involved in supporting and developing these settlements.

On September 21, 2026, the British government officially recognized the independent state of Palestine, an action widely interpreted as reflecting a growing divergence between Western nations and the Israeli regime.

Previously, British Members of Parliament, during a session concerning the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza, had sharply criticized the government of Keir Starmer. They warned that silence in the face of Israeli regime’s crimes amounted to complicity in genocide and illegal actions against the Palestinian people.

The session commenced with an urgent question posed by Leila Moran, a Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament, who described the dire situation of the people in Gaza and called for decisive action from the British government.

In response, Julian Smith, the UK Minister of State for the Middle East, condemned the Israeli regime’s policies and spoke of the government’s purported actions in providing aid. However, many MPs deemed these measures insufficient and belated.
