Trump Makes New Claims on Iran-US Understanding, Amidst Official Clarifications

U.S. President Donald Trump has once again put forth claims regarding the potential understanding between Tehran and Washington, even as Iranian officials state the draft text is under review and no response has been issued.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, based on data published by the Mehr News Agency in conjunction with Al Jazeera, U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated claims about the specifics of a potential understanding between Tehran and Washington aimed at ending the ongoing conflict. This comes despite Iranian officials confirming that the draft text of the potential understanding is still being discussed and reviewed in Tehran, with no response yet dispatched.

Trump asserted that “Iran has agreed not to pursue nuclear weapons.” This claim follows numerous instances where the U.S. President has been known to make factually inaccurate statements. Senior Iranian officials have repeatedly emphasized that Iran’s nuclear program is for peaceful purposes and that nuclear weapons are not part of Iran’s defense doctrine. International Atomic Energy Agency reports have also consistently indicated that Iran is not seeking to develop nuclear weapons.

Earlier, on Monday, Donald Trump had claimed he believed “an agreement with Iran will be reached next week to extend the ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.” These assertions from Trump regarding the potential understanding arise as the Mehr News Agency reported on Monday, citing a source close to the Iranian negotiation team, that the draft text of the potential understanding between Tehran and Washington for ending the war is still under discussion and review in Tehran, and no response has been sent. The informed source told Mehr that the history of U.S. “breach of contract” and “historical mistrust” toward the United States has led Tehran to examine the matter with significant strictness.

The source stressed that Iran, based on past experiences, seeks “real benefit” from any agreement. They added, “America is concerned about the war; we are concerned about the agreement, because America has spent a lot on the war and has not succeeded.” This source indicated that Iran has previously faced breaches of agreement from the opposing party. Therefore, Tehran’s basis for reviewing any agreement will be reversibility and tangible executive actions.

Trump further alleged in his statements today that “(Ayatollah) Mojtaba Khamenei is participating in the negotiations with the United States,” and claimed, “They say Mojtaba Khamenei declares his agreement (shows a green light) in the talks. The situation in Iran is rapidly evolving and will become very good.” He also suggested he “might meet with (Ayatollah) Mojtaba Khamenei at some point.”

In another part of his remarks, Donald Trump commented on the tense situation on the borders of Lebanon and occupied Palestine, stating, “I am distressed by the continuation of clashes between Israel and Lebanon.” Without referencing the extensive political and military support from the United States to the Zionist regime in its alleged genocide in Gaza and widespread crimes in Lebanon and the region, Trump claimed to have spoken with Netanyahu in a “harsh and angry tone.” He stated, “I had intense negotiations with Netanyahu. I am unhappy with his constant war in Lebanon.”
