Russia Demands Israeli Troop Withdrawal from Lebanon, Cites Escalating Violations

Russia has reiterated its demand for the immediate withdrawal of Israeli military forces from Lebanese territory, urging an urgent ceasefire and a political resolution based on UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russia‘s Foreign Ministry spokesperson has emphasized the necessity of Israeli military forces exiting Lebanese soil. Maria Zakharova, speaking to Al Mayadeen, stated, “We decisively call for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon.” The senior Russian official further elaborated that Moscow advocates for a political and diplomatic resolution to the conflict in Lebanon, grounded in the provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Russia reaffirmed its support for Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity.

Zakharova cautioned, “We are not witnessing adherence to the ceasefire in Lebanon, and the ceasefire violations by the Israeli side are planned.” She noted that the Israeli army continues its military operations, gradually expanding its occupied areas in southern Lebanon. The head of Russia’s diplomatic apparatus also indicated readiness to cooperate with regional partners and continue efforts to stabilize the situation in Lebanon and the Middle East. Moscow expressed concern over the threats posed to Lebanon’s cultural sites by Israeli actions and shared common concerns with UNESCO regarding Israeli attacks on the Al-Shaqif Castle in Lebanon.

Maria Zakharova highlighted concerns over Israeli strikes on the city of Tyre, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. She condemned the intentional targeting or wanton destruction of cultural sites as an illegal and unacceptable act.
