Israel Escalates Southern Lebanon Operations, Targeting Key Cities Amid Shifting Strategy

Israel has intensified its military operations in southern Lebanon, expanding its focus beyond border areas to include strategic cities like Tyre and Nabatieh, signaling a potential shift in strategy aimed at weakening Hezbollah and altering the regional security landscape.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, recent Israeli evacuation orders, encompassing Tyre and Nabatieh in southern Lebanon, indicate a fundamental change in the nature of Israel’s military actions. Military affairs analyst Brigadier General Mohammed Al-Samadi stated that Israel is moving from concentrating on border regions to targeting internal Lebanese areas, believing it has achieved battlefield gains that permit a transition from containment to intense attrition.

Speaking to Al-Araby from Amman, Jordan, Al-Samadi elaborated that these evacuation orders are not standard warnings but rather precursors to a new phase of military operations. These are designed to permanently alter the security reality in southern Lebanon by degrading Hezbollah’s military capabilities and preventing any threats to Israeli settlements in the north.

Al-Samadi emphasized that including strategic cities like Tyre and Nabatieh in the evacuation plan is a significant development, signaling Israel’s readiness to broaden its operations. This expansion aims to create a wider zone of fire while simultaneously sending deterrent messages to Iran. Field evidence, such as the fortification of Israeli positions in southern Lebanon over recent months, suggests Tel Aviv is seeking a long-term military presence in strategic areas. Tel Aviv continues to expand its operations to dismantle Hezbollah’s military capabilities and reduce long-term threat sources.

In parallel, Mohammed Humeiyah, a researcher of regional and international affairs, believes the recent escalation by the Israeli regime in southern Lebanon aims to increase pressure on Hezbollah and alter the security equation that prevailed previously. Humeiyah told Al-Araby from Beirut that Tyre, as the second-largest city in southern Lebanon, holds significant symbolic and strategic importance. With tens of thousands of residents and surrounding villages, evacuation warnings issued to the city carry political and military dimensions extending beyond immediate battlefield concerns.

He further explained that Israel has failed to impose a ‘Beirut’s Dahiyeh versus northern settlements’ equation to guarantee the security of its northern settlements, particularly after Iran’s involvement and the establishment of a new equation. Targeting Beirut’s Dahiyeh would lead to retaliatory attacks on Israel. Humeiyah noted that this situation presents Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet with increasing challenges in protecting the northern front, prompting Israel to expand its military operations in southern Lebanon through intensified strikes and warnings to key areas and cities like Tyre.

Meanwhile, Imtaz Shehadeh, program director for Israel studies at the Madar Center, asserted that Israel’s escalating tensions in Lebanon are part of Tel Aviv’s efforts to prevent any potential agreement between the United States and Iran. Israel perceives any understanding between the two as detrimental to its strategic interests. Shehadeh informed Al-Araby from Haifa that U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly spoken of an impending agreement with Tehran, but these pronouncements have not yet translated into concrete actions and are difficult to rely on given the existing political complexities. Shehadeh added that Israel is consistently pressuring the U.S. administration to prevent a Washington-Tehran deal, running parallel to its battlefield escalations. He views the recent military movements in Lebanon as part of this endeavor.

Iran, for its part, has declared its readiness to respond to any escalation in southern Lebanon, while Israel endeavors to broaden the scope of confrontation to achieve objectives not met during the war. The primary goals include delivering a significant blow to Iran’s nuclear program and weakening Iran.
