Trump Claims Exclusive Authority Over Hormuz Strait Tolls Amid International Law Dispute

U.S. President Donald Trump has asserted that no transit tolls will be imposed in the Strait of Hormuz beyond a 60-day period unless initiated by and for the benefit of the United States, a claim that contravenes international maritime law and established territorial sovereignty.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, based on data released by the Mehr News Agency quoting Al Jazeera network, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that after the 60-day period concludes, there will be no transit tolls in the Strait of Hormuz.

He further asserted that no transit tolls would be imposed in the Strait of Hormuz unless they are implemented by and for the benefit of the United States.

These statements, which conflict with international law, are being made even though the Strait of Hormuz falls within the sovereign territory of Iran and Oman. The United States, as a trans-regional power, holds no legal right or on-the-ground capability to set regulations in this strategic waterway.

Trump claimed that any tolls imposed [in the Strait of Hormuz] would likely be in our favor, as we are the guardians of the Middle East, and this action is to recoup our past, present, and future expenses. This exorbitant claim comes at a time when Trump had consistently maintained that the Strait of Hormuz is an international waterway and Iran has no right to collect any tolls. However, with a preposterous shift in stance, he is now seeking to extort and gain commercial revenue from the very same waterway under Iran’s control.
