UN Security Council Warns of Mass Atrocities in Sudan Amid El Obeid Offensive

The council members highlighted the imminent threat of “mass atrocities” and indiscriminate killings, urging the RSF to immediately cease their attacks on El Obeid. The statement also conveyed deep concern regarding the ongoing violence across Sudan, particularly in the Kordofan states, warning that the continued escalation could worsen the humanitarian crisis. The Security Council called upon all warring parties to cease hostilities immediately and to protect civilians. Council members emphasized that all parties must uphold their obligations under international law, including humanitarian law, and implement the terms of the “Jeddah Declaration.” Additionally, concerns were raised about reports of RSF drone attacks on El Obeid and the increased use of drones by belligerents in other regions of Sudan. They called for investigations into all violations and transgressions, holding perpetrators accountable. The Security Council underscored the necessity of safe, rapid, and unimpeded access for humanitarian assistance and urged all parties to ensure the safe passage of civilians in accordance with international law.
