Qatar Foreign Minister Warns of Sabotage Efforts Targeting Iran-US Talks

Qatar’s Foreign Minister has stated that external actors are seeking to undermine negotiations between Iran and the United States, while emphasizing the positive impact of a recent memorandum of understanding in de-escalating regional conflicts. The diplomat highlighted the importance of continued dialogue and diplomatic solutions to prevent wider crises.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Qatar‘s Foreign Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, informed Al Jazeera that a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran has successfully halted hostilities. He noted that this understanding required significant efforts, involving partners like Pakistan and regional support. The primary aim of the agreement between Washington and Tehran is to cease conflict and pave the way for further negotiations.

Al Thani further indicated that additional issues between Washington and Tehran, including the nuclear program and regional security concerns such as the Strait of Hormuz, are subject to consultation. He explained that the memorandum establishes an institutional framework for the negotiation process, encompassing both political and technical aspects.

He added that the understanding is predicated on the commitment of both parties to periodic meetings and problem-solving. The institutional framework introduced recently is deemed beneficial, with ongoing technical discussions building upon the established foundations.

Al Thani mentioned that challenges related to Lebanon and the Strait of Hormuz were addressed through implemented mechanisms. He stressed the need for caution, acknowledging that external circumstances, despite the prevailing will for dialogue, could potentially impact the negotiations.

He further stated that political will for participation in the negotiations exists among all parties. Qatar collaborated with Pakistan to construct a framework aimed at safeguarding and strengthening the negotiation process. He affirmed their ongoing mediation efforts with Pakistan to find solutions that bridge the divide between the parties.

Al Thani emphasized Qatar’s priority is to extinguish regional fires and achieve a state of calm. He advocated for diplomatic solutions to prevent the escalation of crises and maintain control. Efforts, he stated, should concentrate on protecting negotiations and achieving outcomes that avert further tensions.

He predicted that the negotiation process between Washington and Tehran would involve numerous points of contention. Al Thani warned that certain entities are actively attempting to derail the talks, but he observed a strong commitment from both sides towards reaching a resolution. He also noted that any escalation of tensions anywhere in the region, whether in Lebanon or elsewhere, would invariably affect the negotiations.

The Qatari Foreign Minister commented that unfortunately, this is not the first instance of Netanyahu exacerbating regional tensions. He asserted that the occupation of Lebanese territory must cease and Lebanese sovereignty must be respected. He pointed to actions that are increasing regional tensions, while Qatar is working to defuse these situations. He concluded by stating that a mechanism has been established to prevent any regional escalation and to address potential events before they transpire.
