Most Ships Utilize Iran-Controlled Route in Strait of Hormuz, Says IMO Chief

The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has stated that a significant number of vessels are departing the Strait of Hormuz, with most opting for the northern route managed by Iran. He emphasized the IMO’s efforts to ensure the safety of maritime traffic and to assist ships in distress.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, data released by Mehr News Agency, citing Al Jazeera, indicates that the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has claimed there are two routes for exiting the Strait of Hormuz: one controlled by Iran and another by the United States and Oman. He announced that a substantial number of ships have begun to leave the Strait of Hormuz, with the majority utilizing the northern, Iran-controlled route.

The IMO Secretary-General stated during his remarks that they are urging ships to avoid taking risks by not transiting unverified routes within the Strait of Hormuz. He added that the IMO is cooperating with multiple parties in the region to provide assurances that vessels will not be threatened.

He further claimed that over the past four days, 150 ships with 4,000 sailors have been successfully moved from open waters. More than 600 ships remain stranded in the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, 14 sailors have lost their lives since the current crisis began in the Strait of Hormuz.

The international official added that they are investigating an incident where a ship was targeted yesterday after passing through the Strait of Hormuz via the southern route. He highlighted that their focus is on guaranteeing the safety of seafarers and that negotiations are underway to activate evacuation corridors. Efforts are also concentrated on ensuring water and fuel supplies for ships, as well as food and medical aid for stranded mariners.

He also mentioned that the IMO is in contact with officials from Oman, Iran, and the United States, and that these nations are strongly supporting their efforts.
