Italy Urges Restraint from Iran and U.S. Amid Escalating Tensions

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has called for restraint between Iran and the United States following recent escalations, emphasizing the need to protect carefully achieved agreements and reaffirming commitment to freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani issued an appeal on Sunday for both Iran and the United States to exercise restraint, particularly after renewed provocations from Washington in the region. Tajani took to social media platform X to urge both nations to de-escalate.

The Italian Foreign Minister stated, “It is essential to avoid any escalation that could jeopardize agreements (between Tehran and Washington) that have been reached with such care. Rome reaffirms its commitment to freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the swift attainment of peace and stability in West Asia.”

This appeal comes amidst reports, citing an unnamed U.S. official, that the U.S. military conducted strikes against targets in Iran in response to an earlier Iranian attack on a commercial tanker. Axios news site previously reported this, with the official confirming alleged violations of the ceasefire by Washington.

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) had officially confirmed these incursions. CENTCOM announced earlier today that U.S. forces, under the direct order of President Donald Trump, carried out further strikes against multiple targets on Iranian soil.

The American command claimed these strikes were a response to Iran’s recent attack on the commercial tanker ‘Kiku,’ which was flying the Panamanian flag and was reportedly targeted by Iranian attack drones.

CENTCOM, without acknowledging repeated ceasefire violations by the U.S., asserted that American fighter jets targeted Iranian military infrastructure, including surveillance systems, communication networks, and air defense sites. The statement further claimed that the U.S. strikes were aimed at Iran’s mine-laying capabilities.
