Burkina Faso Demands French Embassy Closure Within Seven Days

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Burkina Faso has formally notified France of its demand for the closure of the French Embassy in Ouagadougou, the nation’s capital. The government has set a strict one-week deadline for the embassy to cease operations.
This official declaration of severed diplomatic ties between Burkina Faso and France signifies more than a bilateral dispute. The decision, announced by Burkina Faso’s transitional government on June 26, 2026, is seen as a continuation of a trend that began with the ascent of Captain Ibrahim Traoré in 2022. It reflects a redefinition of the country’s foreign policy, emphasizing national sovereignty, reducing dependence on traditional Western powers, and expanding cooperation with new partners.
In its official statement, the Burkinabe government declared that the necessary conditions for maintaining diplomatic relations with France, including mutual respect, trust, non-interference in internal affairs, and respect for national sovereignty, no longer exist. The statement accused France of adopting neo-colonial approaches, interfering in internal matters, and acting against Burkina Faso’s national interests.
