Iran Explores Resuming Oil Exports to Japan Amid Sanctions Waivers

Tehran has initiated discussions with Japanese firms regarding the potential resumption of crude oil exports, exploring opportunities within the framework of U.S. sanctions exemptions. Japanese companies are reportedly seeking assurances on shipping security and export stability.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Iran has commenced negotiations with several Japanese companies to explore the possibility of resuming crude oil exports to Japan under the U.S. sanctions waiver program, as reported by Mehr News Agency, citing Reuters.

While Japanese companies have expressed interest in this proposal, they are reportedly requesting an extension of the sanctions waiver period and guarantees concerning the security of tanker navigation and the stability of the export process.

The aforementioned waiver was issued as part of a 60-day negotiation period between Tehran and Washington and remains valid until August 21.

Reuters also reported, citing Iranian sources, that three Japanese companies are currently evaluating terms for purchasing Iranian crude oil. If these negotiations finalize, Japan would resume oil imports from Iran for the first time since 2019.

Prior to the intensification of U.S. sanctions, Japan was a traditional customer of Iranian oil, but it halted oil imports from Iran in 2019.
