China Conducts Strategic Missile Test in Pacific Ocean

China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy successfully launched a strategic missile carrying a training warhead from a nuclear submarine into the open Pacific Ocean, prompting concerns from regional powers. The test, described by Beijing as a routine drill, has been met with warnings from Australia and Japan.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, China‘s People’s Liberation Army Navy has conducted a strategic missile test in the Pacific Ocean. Wang Shuming, spokesperson for the Chinese Navy, announced via the Navy’s WeChat application that at 12:01 PM on July 6, a strategic nuclear submarine of the PLA Navy successfully launched a strategic missile with a training warhead towards the open waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Xinhua news agency also reported that the Chinese military carried out a test missile launch from a nuclear submarine towards the Pacific Ocean on Monday. The agency further explained that the missile, equipped with a dummy warhead, was fired into international waters in the Pacific Ocean. However, the report did not provide further details regarding the specific impact location of the missile.

Xinhua described the launch as a “routine provision” within China’s annual military drills, emphasizing that it was not directed against any specific country or target. This development follows China’s last intercontinental ballistic missile test in 2024, which highlighted the nation’s expanding military capabilities.

In response to the test, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong issued a warning, stating that the long-range missile launch in the southern Pacific Ocean would “destabilize” the region. “Australia has warned China that we consider this destabilizing for the region,” Wong told reporters.

The Japanese government also announced it had received notification of the missile launch and urged China to reconsider its actions. Kyodo News, citing a Japanese government source, reported that the missile landed outside of Japan’s exclusive economic zone.
