US Central Command Claims Strait of Hormuz Remains Open Amid Tensions

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has asserted that the Strait of Hormuz remains open for all lawful maritime traffic, contradicting claims by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that the vital waterway was closed due to alleged violations of a ceasefire by American forces.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) issued a statement asserting that the Strait of Hormuz is open to all vessels intending to transit the international waterway lawfully. This claim comes after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced earlier that the strait had been closed due to alleged ceasefire violations by American terrorists in the Strait of Hormuz.

CENTCOM, without acknowledging Tehran’s sovereignty over the international waterway, stated in its release: “The Strait of Hormuz remains open to all vessels intending to transit this international waterway lawfully. Our forces are postured and prepared to ensure freedom of navigation continues despite Iran’s unwarranted and hostile actions.” The U.S. military command further claimed that Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz and that ship traffic continues, citing the passage of over 140 vessels through the strait in the past seven days. This statement by CENTCOM, reportedly aimed at domestic consumption and to downplay the repercussions of creating insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz, suggests an ongoing narrative of contested control over the crucial chokepoint.

Meanwhile, the text suggests that the U.S. military presence in the region has disrupted security and contributed to instability in the Strait of Hormuz. Recent developments in Iran-U.S. relations indicate a continued sensitive and complex phase, with recent U.S. strikes inside Iran reportedly marking the beginning of a new cycle of military and political tensions. This period is characterized by simultaneous indications of ongoing diplomatic engagement alongside increased political and security maneuvers, adding to the ambiguity of the situation. These circumstances have arisen while recent statements from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding interactions with Iran have raised fresh questions about Washington’s actual strategy, rather than providing a clear picture of the future.

President Trump has recently alluded to the end of a ceasefire while also speaking of continued negotiations, positions interpreted as reflecting a dual approach in U.S. policy. This duality has been observed previously in dealings with Iran, where Washington has consistently sought to maintain channels of dialogue while simultaneously employing political, economic, and security pressure to enhance its bargaining power.

Within this framework, a significant point of discussion revolves around the fate of a memorandum of understanding intended to manage tensions and establish a framework for reducing differences between the two sides. While this understanding had the potential to de-escalate tensions and move towards greater stability, America’s departure from its commitments has once again made mistrust the primary obstacle to any potential agreement.
