Iraq Halts Major Gas Field Operations Amid Security Threats

Security concerns have forced the suspension of activities at the major ‘Kormor’ gas field in Iraq, located between Kirkuk and Sulaymaniyah. This development follows a separate incident where a drone attack targeted an oil tanker in the port of Basra.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Dana Gas, an energy company, has announced the cessation of operations at its primary production facilities in Iraq‘s “Kormor” gas field due to escalating security threats. The “Kormor” field, situated between the cities of Kirkuk and Sulaymaniyah and managed by the Kurdistan Regional Government, has been a recurrent target of attacks in recent years, with no group claiming responsibility.

This news emerges as Reuters reported earlier today, citing Iraqi security and oil sources, that an oil tanker at the port of Basra was targeted by a drone attack. While no damage was reported, oil loading and export operations at Basra port were halted following the incident. In response, the Iraqi Ministry of Oil stated that crude oil loading operations from southern ports are continuing and an investigation is underway concerning the incident where an unidentified object hit near one of the tankers. The ministry clarified that reports of a halt in oil loading from southern ports due to a drone falling on an oil tanker are inaccurate. According to the Ministry of Oil, the Iraqi State Oil Marketing Company (SOMO) is still investigating the incident of an unidentified object falling onto one of the tankers, and the results will be announced upon completion of the investigation.
