Russian Media Warns UK’s Entry into Conflict with Iran Will Escalate War
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russian media outlet ‘Izvestia’ has analyzed the potential consequences of direct involvement by the United Kingdom, alongside the United States, in hostilities against Iran. The report cites analysis from Vladislav Petrov and Yulia Leonova.
Grigory Karasin, Chairman of the Committee for Foreign Affairs of the Federation Council of Russia, speaking to ‘Izvestia’, highlighted the emergence of a Western bloc that he believes threatens international order. Reports indicate that the new UK Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, has authorized the United States to utilize British bases for conducting strikes against Iran.
Military expert Dmitry Kornev commented that Burnham’s decision solidifies the current strategic situation, stating that fundamentally nothing has changed for Washington, as the Pentagon continues to leverage British infrastructure for its Middle Eastern operations. However, the Russian source noted that it is premature to speak of full UK engagement in the conflict. Given the limited military power of the United Kingdom in the Middle East, the utmost its forces could achieve is symbolic support for the Americans, potentially limited to intercepting Iranian drones or providing cover for support facilities.
Kornev concluded that London lacks the necessary resources for extensive operations due to prolonged budget cuts and the downsizing of its armed forces. The military role of the UK is expected to remain confined to infrastructure, with the kingdom continuing to serve as a logistical hub for the United States.
Nevertheless, the close coordination between Washington and London is anticipated to delay any resolution, particularly as Tehran has repeatedly demonstrated its capacity for resolute defense of its interests, even under pressure. The Russian source also emphasized potential risks extending beyond the region. Following the development of operational cooperation between the US and UK, these nations might transfer this experience to other areas experiencing geopolitical tensions. This is of particular concern for Europe, where Western politicians are reportedly using the ‘bogeyman of the Russian threat’ to bolster their military forces.
