South Korea and U.S. Announce Joint Military Drills Amid North Korean Missile Activity

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, South Korea and the United States confirmed on Monday that their forces will begin their annual joint military drills next week. The exercises are framed as a measure to enhance preparedness against alleged threats from North Korea, occurring just days after Pyongyang resumed its ballistic missile testing activities.

Jang Doo-yong, a spokesperson for the South Korean military, informed reporters that the “Ulchi Freedom Shield” exercise is scheduled to run for 11 days starting next Monday. The scale of the drills is expected to be similar to previous years, with approximately 18,000 South Korean military personnel participating.

Ryan Donald, a spokesperson for the U.S. military, stated during the same press briefing that the exercise will incorporate realistic threat scenarios, including lessons learned from recent conflicts. He emphasized that this provides an opportunity to further enhance the alliance’s readiness and capabilities through combined, joint, and multi-domain operations across all battlefronts.

Donald also referenced North Korea’s alleged deployment of troops to support Russia’s conflict in Ukraine in recent years.
