USS Abraham Lincoln Crew Faces Mental Health Crisis Amid Extended Deployment
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, data published by the Mehr News Agency, citing The Guardian, indicates that the prolonged and unprecedented mission of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in connection with the U.S.-Israel conflict against Iran has exacerbated mental health crises among its approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines. Reports suggest multiple sailors have attempted to take their own lives by jumping into the sea.
Families of the sailors and Marines stationed on the USS Abraham Lincoln, along with several members of the U.S. Congress, have raised alarms about the deteriorating living conditions for the ship’s crew. The Guardian’s report further details that the crew and Marines of the Abraham Lincoln have been suffering from extreme fatigue, shortages of food and essential supplies, and poor sanitary conditions after eight months at sea.
Sources close to the crew and sailors on the Lincoln have conveyed that medical personnel have warned of a potential mental breakdown among the crew if the ship does not dock soon. Two prominent military newspapers, Navy Times and Stars and Stripes, reported that numerous attempts by sailors to jump from the deck into the sea have occurred, as the dire conditions and mental stresses on the USS Abraham Lincoln have reached a peak. The crew is in their ninth month at sea, having spent 250 consecutive days without docking, setting a modern record for an aircraft carrier deployment.
The Guardian stated that it contacted the U.S. Navy for a response regarding reports of sailors attempting to jump from the ship’s deck. Following the publication of this article, a Navy official responded, acknowledging that “prolonged deployments place significant pressure on our sailors, Marines, and their families.” The aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln departed its homeport in San Diego in November 2025 and has since spent nine months at sea, with the final five months dedicated to participating in U.S. combat operations against Iran.
This is not the first time reports of issues concerning the Lincoln have surfaced. In March 2026, an incident occurred where a fighter jet was unable to land on the carrier’s deck, with experts speculating a malfunction in the aircraft arresting system. Prior to that, even before the commencement of military operations against Iran, some sections of the ship experienced flooding due to technical problems and a fire. Reports also emerged regarding issues with the ship’s sanitation facilities.
