Syria Protests Colombia’s Recognition of Israeli Occupation of Golan Heights

Syria has formally protested to the United Nations over Colombia’s recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights, denouncing the move as a clear violation of international law.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Syria has lodged a strong protest with the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, and the current President of the UN Security Council, Denmark’s Ambassador to the UN, Cristina Mørch. The Syrian government expressed its “protest, condemnation, and firm opposition to Colombia’s claim in favor of Israel in this region.”

The official Syrian news agency, SANA, reported that the message reiterated Syria’s unequivocal rejection of ongoing Israeli aggressions on its territory. Syria urged all nations and international bodies to uphold their responsibilities regarding respect for international law and UN resolutions.

Colombia announced on Monday that it recognizes the sovereignty of the Israeli occupiers over the occupied Golan Heights, becoming the second country globally after the United States to take such a stance. This decision was made just three days after the inauguration of Colombia’s new president, Abelardo de la Espriella, who has pledged to strengthen relations with Tel Aviv and transfer the Colombian embassy to occupied Jerusalem.

The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the decision, emphasizing that the Golan Heights are “an inalienable part of Syrian territory.” Colombia’s recognition of this occupation was described as a “blatant violation of the UN Charter.” Several Arab nations, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Oman, and Turkey, also denounced Bogota’s action. Previously, UN Secretary-General Guterres had stated that the Golan is Syrian territory and called for an end to Israeli transgressions against Syria.

Notably, former Colombian President Gustavo Petro was a vocal critic of Israel, having severed diplomatic ties in 2024 due to alleged genocide in the Gaza Strip. Petro and his supporters have alleged that the current president’s victory was facilitated by the manipulation of over 1.5 million votes due to electoral system hacking.
