US Navy Destroyer Suffers Major Outage in South China Sea

The USS Benfold, a US Navy destroyer, experienced a four-day breakdown in its power and electrical systems last month while operating in the South China Sea, leaving its sanitation, kitchen, and air conditioning systems unusable amidst high temperatures.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, CNN reported that the US Navy destroyer Benfold lost essential services, including usable restrooms, kitchen facilities, and air conditioning, for four full days last month due to a failure in its power and electrical systems. The incident occurred in the South China Sea, an area known for its high ambient temperatures.

Matthew Comer, a spokesperson for the Seventh Fleet, stated that the malfunction on the USS Benfold took place during routine operations in the Indo-Pacific region on July 24. Comer elaborated that in addition to the loss of automatic maneuvering capabilities, the destroyer, which weighs approximately 10,000 tons, also experienced disruptions in its kitchen services, restrooms, air conditioning, and potable water supply.

More than 20 days after the incident, the exact cause of the power outage on the warship remains under investigation, according to the spokesperson. This event comes as the US Navy faces increasing public scrutiny following reports of deteriorating mental health conditions among US military personnel aboard the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, which had been at sea for over 200 consecutive days in the Middle East.

Some experts and numerous Democratic lawmakers contend that the US Navy’s capabilities and resources are being depleted due to issues stemming from the conflict with Iran. A statement from the Navy indicated that repairs to the Benfold were completed by August 8, and the vessel has since returned to service as part of the strike group for the aircraft carrier USS George Washington. This carrier group is en route to the Middle East to relieve the USS Lincoln.
