U.S. Imposes Sanctions on International Criminal Court President

The United States Treasury Department has announced new sanctions targeting the President of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and other officials, escalating tensions with the global judicial body.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the U.S. Treasury Department announced on Tuesday the imposition of sanctions against the President of the International Criminal Court. The sanctions were reported by the Mehr News Agency, citing Al Jazeera. Reuters also reported that the U.S. has implemented new sanctions against the ICC in The Hague.

These measures specifically target ICC President Judge Tomoko Akane of Japan and Judge Abdoulaye Yaya Sow of Senegal. Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated, “We will dismantle the International Criminal Court using every tool at the government’s disposal and cooperating with any ally we can to achieve a common goal, and if necessary, we will tear it down brick by brick.”

Rubio had accused the ICC of being supported and administered by a powerful network of left-wing non-governmental organizations and third-world governments united by their animosity toward the United States. U.S. dissatisfaction with the court dates back to the first term of President Donald Trump, when the legal institution faced criticism for attempting to investigate alleged war crimes committed by U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

During Trump’s second presidential term, a series of sanctions were imposed on court officials for their efforts to investigate alleged crimes by the United States and the Israeli regime.
