Tajikistan Seeks 2.5 Million Tons of Oil Products from Iran Amid Russian Shortages

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Tajikistan has put forth a request to import 2.5 million tons of oil and petroleum products from Iran. This Central Asian nation is seeking these supplies as its traditional provider, Russia, is currently grappling with its own fuel deficits.
The Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan announced this development, noting that the country requires 2.55 million tons of fuel in total. This includes 2 million tons of crude oil, 150,000 tons of gasoline, 300,000 tons of diesel fuel, and 100,000 tons of jet fuel. A statement detailing these requirements was published on the ministry’s website.
Historically, Tajikistan has relied on Russia for up to 80 percent of its petroleum product needs. However, the current situation in Russia, stemming from Ukrainian drone attacks on its oil refineries, has led to fuel shortages and import/export restrictions on gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel to stabilize its domestic market. This has prompted Tajikistan, a Persian-speaking country with close cultural and linguistic ties to Iran, to seek alternative sources.
The timeframe for these anticipated shipments has not yet been specified. In parallel, recent calls by the United States for global cooperation in imposing sanctions against Iran have reportedly faced setbacks.
