Slovak Prime Minister Fico: Ukraine Conflict Lacks Military Solution

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has asserted that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine does not possess a military resolution. Speaking to reporters in Sofia after a meeting with the Bulgarian Prime Minister, Fico indicated that Slovakia would not endorse further escalation of the war, suggesting that any proposed path to prolong the conflict would be rejected by his nation.

Fico underscored the importance of understanding the historical context of the conflict, referencing events in 2014 and Odessa as crucial to grasping the war’s origins. Despite Slovakia’s membership in the European Union and NATO, the country has, under Fico’s leadership, distanced itself from the prevailing policies of these blocs concerning the Ukraine war, which began in February 2022.

Robert Fico, who returned to power in 2023, has been a vocal critic of military assistance to Ukraine and the sanctions imposed on Russia. He has consistently advocated for diplomatic engagement and direct negotiations with Moscow.

In May 2025, Fico was the sole EU leader to attend Victory Day celebrations in Moscow, using the occasion to reiterate his call for dialogue with Russia.
