North Korea Conducts Short-Range Ballistic Missile Tests
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, South Korean media reported on Saturday that North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles into the sea off its eastern coast from the Wonsan area. The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) of South Korea stated that the launches occurred around 5:20 AM, with the missiles traveling approximately 250 kilometers. South Korean and U.S. officials are currently engaged in a detailed analysis of the missiles’ specifications.
The JCS further indicated that South Korean and U.S. intelligence agencies monitored the launch operations from their inception and have been exchanging relevant information. Data concerning these ballistic missiles has also been shared with Japan. South Korea’s military is closely observing North Korean activities and maintains readiness and capability to respond decisively to any provocations as part of its joint defense posture with the United States.
The office of the South Korean President announced that the National Security Office convened an emergency security meeting following the launch, attended by the Ministry of National Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and other relevant agencies. Officials reviewed the government’s response, assessed the impact of the launch on South Korea’s security, and discussed necessary actions. The statement urged North Korea to immediately cease its ballistic missile launches, deeming them a serious violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.
In parallel, the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command confirmed awareness of the launches and is in close consultations with allies and partners. The command assessed that, based on current evaluations, these launches do not pose an immediate threat to U.S. personnel, territory, or allies. A post on X from the command reiterated the U.S. commitment to defending its territory and allies in the region.
Saturday’s launches by North Korea occurred one day after the conclusion of joint military drills involving South Korea, Japan, and the United States, designed to test their readiness against North Korean missile and nuclear threats.
