Erdogan Vows to Run for 2028 Turkish Presidency Amid Shifting Polls

This announcement comes from a Turkish official cited by Agence France-Presse, with reports originating from Al Jazeera and Mehr News Agency.
The timing of this declaration by a Turkish official is notable, occurring shortly after a new poll conducted by the Yoneks Research Institute indicated that Erdogan could face defeat in a potential second round of elections against two prominent opposition figures. The survey, conducted across 51 provinces in August, questioned participants on their potential choices if Erdogan and Ekrem İmamoğlu advanced to a runoff. The results showed İmamoğlu securing 51.3% of the votes compared to Erdogan’s 48.7%.
Ekrem İmamoğlu, the suspended mayor of Istanbul and head of the Union of Municipalities of Turkey, is considered a key opposition leader and a principal rival to Erdogan in future presidential contests. He has been detained since March 19, 2025, at the Marmara Prison in Silivri.
