European Fuel Prices Surge 23.8% Year-on-Year in August

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, fuel and lubricant prices for personal transport within the European Union experienced a substantial 23.8% increase in August 2026 compared to the same period in the previous year. This surge follows annual increases of 13.7% in June and 16.9% in July. The data was released by Eurostat, as reported by Anadolu Agency via Mehr News Agency.

The price hike was observed across 26 out of the 27 EU member states, with 18 countries recording an annual growth exceeding 20%. Bulgaria registered the highest annual price increase for fuel at 34.5%, followed closely by Lithuania (28.8%), Finland (27.6%), Germany (27.5%), and France (27.4%). Hungary experienced the smallest annual increase at 1.3%, with Sweden (6.1%) and Ireland (11.7%) also showing comparatively modest rises.

On a month-on-month basis, diesel prices in the EU rose by 8.3% in August, while gasoline prices increased by 3.3% compared to July. In July, diesel prices had seen a 4.3% rise and gasoline prices a 4.7% increase from the preceding month.

Between July and August, diesel prices climbed in 26 EU countries. The Czech Republic reported the largest monthly growth at 14.3%, followed by Bulgaria (13.5%) and Luxembourg (12.3%).

Regarding gasoline prices, increases were noted in 22 countries, while prices remained stable in two and declined in three. Spain recorded the highest monthly increase in gasoline prices at 8.2%, trailed by Romania (6.6%), Italy (6.3%), and Cyprus (6.2%).
