Marco Rubio Appointed U.S. National Security Advisor

President of the United States has signed an order appointing Secretary of State Marco Rubio as the permanent National Security Advisor, a White House official announced, as reported by The Hill via Mehr News Agency.

Rubio is the first individual to hold both the Secretary of State and National Security Advisor positions concurrently since Henry Kissinger.

Prior to this permanent appointment, Rubio had been serving as the interim National Security Advisor following the resignation of Mike Waltz, the former National Security Advisor and current U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

Waltz stepped down from his role more than a year ago, in May 2025, after becoming involved in a controversy known as “Signalgate.” This incident involved him inadvertently adding the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic magazine to a private chat group on the Signal messaging app.
