EU Warns of Potentially Harsh Winter Amid Soaring Energy Prices and Supply Concerns
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the European Union could be bracing for its harshest winter since 2022, with unprecedented energy prices and potential supply issues from the United States looming. EU Energy and Housing Commissioner Dan Jørgensen conveyed these concerns in an interview with the Financial Times, highlighting the critical juncture the bloc faces regarding energy security.
Jørgensen appealed to U.S. President Donald Trump to ensure the continued free flow of energy resources, emphasizing that such a measure would benefit both the European Union and the United States. Despite potential continued energy supply, the European official cautioned that a difficult winter season remains a distinct possibility for the continent.
The Financial Times reported that diesel prices in Europe have approached their historical record highs. Adding to the market’s volatility were recent remarks from President Trump indicating a potential support for a ban on U.S. diesel exports. Traders believe that implementing such a ban would have catastrophic consequences for Europe, given the United States’ significant role as a key energy supplier to the region.
In response to these challenges, the European Commission is actively exploring various measures to mitigate energy prices. This strategic consideration is partly a reaction to recent calls from French President Emmanuel Macron, who advocated for delaying stricter mandates on methane imports and streamlining fuel refining regulations.
Earlier reports from Agence France-Presse (AFP), citing data from the European Commission, indicated that diesel prices in Europe had reached a record high of 2.23 euros per liter.
