Poll Shows Majority of Armenians Favor Continued Russian Military Presence

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, results from a survey conducted by MPG reveal that 39.7 percent of Armenian citizens consider the Russian military base essential for Armenia’s security, with an additional 24.7 percent believing the base should remain. Russia has maintained a military presence in Armenia since the 1990s, with the 102nd Russian military base in Gyumri serving as a cornerstone of bilateral security cooperation under mutual agreements.

Historically, Russian border guards were also deployed along sections of Armenia’s borders with Turkey and Iran, as well as at other border points. However, this presence has seen a reduction in recent years. Russian border guards departed from Zvartnots Airport in 2024 and have also withdrawn from several border checkpoints by the beginning of 2025.
