EU’s Kallas Suggests Syria Has Alternatives to Russian Military Support

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, claimed on Tuesday that Moscow utilized its bases to assist Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Kallas asserted that Russia continues to support Assad and expressed hope that a recent memorandum of understanding would lead to a reduction in Moscow’s military presence and influence in Syria.

“Syria has suitable alternatives to relying on Russia,” Kallas stated, adding that Europe desires the success of the transition process in Syria. She indicated that the EU wants Syria to reclaim its rightful place in the international community and is prepared to assist in making this a sustainable process. Kallas emphasized that the current task is to translate closer relations into tangible improvements in the lives of the Syrian people.

This seemingly friendly stance from an EU official against Russia, in a nominal show of support for Damascus, comes despite Syria having been under severe sanctions from the Western-Israeli-Arab axis during Bashar al-Assad’s presidency. Following the promotion of rebels by this axis, Europe is now publicly claiming to offer assistance to Damascus.
