Somaliland Separatists Seek Israeli Air Defense Systems Amid Turkish Influence Concerns

Somaliland, a self-declared republic in Somalia, has reportedly requested advanced air defense systems, including F-16 fighter jets and drones, from Israel. This move comes amid concerns over escalating Turkish military influence in the region.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the self-declared region of Somaliland has requested new air defense systems from the Israeli regime, as reported by the Middle East Eye news site citing Mohamed Osman Fadel, a Somaliland official. The data was initially published by the Mehr News Agency.

The request from Somaliland separatists has been framed as a measure to counter the growing military presence of Turkey in Somalia. They have also expressed a desire to be equipped with F-16 fighter jets and drones.

This development occurs despite earlier statements by Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the President of Somalia, who told Al Jazeera that his country would not accept any Israeli presence under any circumstances. He added that attempts to export Middle Eastern crises into Somalia would be unsuccessful and that Somalia would overcome the challenges posed by Israel’s actions. President Mohamud indicated that Israel intends to establish a naval base in Berbera and utilize the city’s airport.

He further stated that the Israeli regime’s objective is to gain proximity to the Persian Gulf and Iran. The President of Somalia emphasized that the people of Somaliland are entirely opposed to an Israeli presence.
