Thousands Rally in Rio de Janeiro Against Trump-Aligned Candidate

Tens of thousands of Brazilian students took to the streets of Rio de Janeiro to protest the potential victory of far-right Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, who led in the first round of elections.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, tens of thousands of Brazilian students gathered in the center of Rio de Janeiro to protest the potential victory of right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro. The demonstration occurred as Bolsonaro outpaced his rival, left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in the first round of the election. Protesters, clad in red symbolizing the left-wing movement, marched through two historic city squares, carrying signs advocating for the preservation of Brazil’s sovereignty and democracy. Many on the left are concerned that a Bolsonaro presidency would turn Brazil into a follower of the United States, a fear amplified by the ideological proximity between Donald Trump and the Bolsonaro family. Last year, Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods, citing alleged “political persecution” against Jair Bolsonaro. Demonstrators, holding slogans such as “Brazil is no one’s backyard” and “I will not vote for someone who sells Brazil,” emphasized their apprehension about Brazil becoming an “American colony.” Flavio Bolsonaro, 45, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, secured a victory in the first round held on Sunday, a result that sent shockwaves through Brazil’s political landscape. With neither candidate securing over 50% of the required votes for an outright win, the election proceeded to a second round on October 25th. Flavio Bolsonaro holds a lead of two million votes, and other right-wing candidates collectively garnered over 8 million votes, indicating the conservative movement’s strength in this electoral cycle. Flavio Bolsonaro has pledged significant public spending cuts, symbolized by his use of a chainsaw, reminiscent of Argentine President Javier Milei and his economic policies. Brazil faces growing public debt exacerbated by high-interest rates, and Bolsonaro’s performance in the first round propelled the Sao Paulo stock market to unprecedented levels. Protesters, recalling his father’s presidency, fear that these cuts could impact federal universities and research budgets. Demonstrators, citing Jair Bolsonaro’s controversial management of the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in over 700,000 deaths in Brazil, warned against the return of his movement to power. Furthermore, Flavio Bolsonaro’s proposal to pardon his father, who was sentenced to 27 years in prison for attempting a coup after the 2022 elections, has drawn the ire of protesters. Allegations of corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion against Flavio Bolsonaro in connection with the failed “Master” bank were also key points of protest.
