Russia Blames EU for Self-Inflicted Gas Shortages

Russia has stated that the severe gas shortages anticipated in the European Union this winter are a direct consequence of the bloc’s own actions. This assertion comes as EU gas reserves reportedly hit their lowest point since 2011, and prices surge to a four-year high.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Kirill Dmitriev, the Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for Investment and Foreign Economic Relations and Head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, has attributed the upcoming gas deficit in the European Union to the bloc’s own policies. His comments were a reaction to a report by Politico regarding the potential energy crisis.

Dmitriev characterized the situation as a “severe and self-made gas shortage in the European Union winter.” Politico’s report indicated that EU member states could face a deficit of approximately 14 billion cubic meters of gas this coming winter. This figure represents about 7 percent of the Union’s total demand and is sufficient to supply energy for 10 to 12 million households.

The report further highlighted that gas reserves within the European Union have fallen to their lowest levels since records began in 2011. In parallel, the energy consultancy firm Argus Media noted that gas prices have ascended to their highest point in the past four years.
