Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Questions Netherlands’ Neutrality in Hosting Sports Events

Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson has urged international sports federations to consider the Netherlands’ track record in ensuring the neutrality of competitions when selecting host nations. The comments come amid ongoing disputes over the participation of Russian athletes in international events.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has called on international sports federations to assess the Netherlands’ ability to guarantee the impartiality of competitions when choosing host countries. Zakharova dismissed claims made by Dutch officials regarding threats from Russia, characterizing such stances as a further example of the decline of Western political elites.

These remarks emerge as disagreements persist over the participation of Russian athletes in international competitions and the restrictions imposed upon them. In October 2026, reports indicated that the Netherlands denied visas to three Russian gymnasts, including world champion Angelina Melnikova. Russian officials condemned this decision as discriminatory.
